FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • How are fermented vegetables made?
Fermented vegetables are made with only 1 additional ingredient. Pure salt. The salt draws the water from the vegetables to create a brine for keeping the veggies in an anaerobic environment. We pre-mince our vegetables to help break down the cell walls and allow for better nutrient release. They are then placed into sterilized fermenting crocks and allowed to age until fermentation has reached it's peak level for providing safe, flavourful and nutrient-dense vegetables!
  • Are fermented vegetables safe?
Absolutely! We ferment our vegetables in an oxygen-free environment which will not allow harmful bacteria or organisms to grow. All our batches are pH tested to ensure they meet or exceed the FDA recommended pH level of 4.6. This guarantees a safe and healthy product.
  • How do I feed fermented vegetables?
Mix in with your pet's regular meals. Fermented vegetables contain a large quantity of probiotics. We recommend starting with about half a teaspoon per meal and gradually increasing the amount daily until you reach 1-2 teaspoons per 10 pounds of body weight. This will help prevent stomach upset.
  • How do I store fermented vegetables?
Our vegetables come frozen as this is the safest way to store them for extended periods of time without losing all the beneficial probiotics and nutrients. We recommend defrosting your vegetables and transfering them to an air tight container, such as a mason jar. If stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator, fermented vegetables should last a minimum of 30 days. Most will last much longer (average 9 months). We do not recommend heating or cooking fermented vegetables. This will destroy the probiotics and many of the bioavailable nutrients.
  • Is it normal for fermented vegetables to have a strange smell?
Yes! During fermentation there is a gas exchange process that unlocks all those healthy nutrients contained within the vegetables. Many vegetables have sulfer-containing compounds that produce a strong smell. This is completely normal and similair to how aged cheeses produce stronger smells.
